See how in this case the two referents of the verb's subject ("to send letters") are also on the receiving end of the action. This reciprocal meaning is expressed by changing the sign from being one-handed to two-handed and agreeing in each hand with one of the two referents. That is, the path movement and the orientation of each hand are determined by each one of the referents.
